What Osaka costs in 2026:
run your own number.
Osaka runs on three budgets: about ¥6,300–10,500 ($40–67) a day backpacker style, ¥20,000–37,500 ($127–238) mid-range, and ¥59,500+ ($377+) when the counters and suites take over — hotels included. Two structural facts do the heavy lifting: the yen at ¥157.7 to the dollar is the weakest in 40 years, and Osaka's rooms run ¥2,000–3,000 a night cheaper than Tokyo's or Kyoto's at every tier, with a lodging tax capped at ¥500 where Kyoto's now reaches ¥10,000. Add the two charges guides forget — that lodging tax, and the ¥3,000 departure tax in force since 1 July 2026 — and the calculator below does the rest.

Every figure is a verified range mid-point. Dollar prices convert at ¥157.7 = $1, the rate on 3 August 2026 — a 40-year yen low, but one that moved 4% in a single week in late July. Treat every $ figure as a snapshot and the ¥ figure as the real price.
Hotel prices by tier — as ranges, because they move
SleepingPer room, per night, city-wide averages. Osaka undercuts Tokyo and Kyoto by ¥2,000–3,000 at every one of these tiers.
| Tier | Typical night | In dollars | The note that matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hostel dorm | ¥2,800–5,000 | $18–32 | Shin-Imamiya's ¥850–2,000 outliers exist — read what that area is first |
| Capsule | ¥3,000–5,500 | $19–35 | Fine for a night; luggage lockers are tight for big bags |
| Budget / business | ¥6,000–10,000 | $38–63 | Toyoko Inn / APA / Super Hotel tier — small, spotless, everywhere |
| Mid-range | ¥12,000–25,000 | $76–159 | The sweet spot; under ¥15,000/night dodges the top lodging-tax band |
| 4-star+ | ¥40,000–80,000 | $254–507 | Umekita is the new luxury cluster; weekends spike hardest here |
Ranges, deliberately — Osaka ADR moved +8–12% year-on-year in 2026 and peak weeks add 30–40%. Verified August 2026.

The two taxes guides forget
The fine printLodging tax — Osaka charges per person per night on top of the room rate: ¥0 under ¥5,000, ¥200 to ¥14,999, ¥400 to ¥19,999, ¥500 at ¥20,000+. Raised 1 September 2025, so most published brackets are stale. It's pocket change — which is the point: Since 1 March 2026 Kyoto charges Japan's highest lodging tax — up to ¥10,000 per person per night, with no exemption at any price. Osaka's tops out at ¥500. A couple in a ¥60,000 room for three nights pays ¥24,000 (~$152) in tax in Kyoto and ¥3,000 in Osaka — and the train between them is 28 minutes, ¥580. That arbitrage has its own page →
Departure tax — Japan's exit levy tripled to ¥3,000 (~$19) on 1 July 2026, charged to every departing passenger aged 2+ and normally bundled invisibly into your airfare. Budget it per person and stop being surprised by the fare line. And a 1 November 2026 heads-up for shoppers: tax-free shopping flips from discount-at-register to refund-at-airport — the mechanics are on the practical page.
Osaka money questions, answered with numbers
FAQPage schema pairedIs Osaka expensive to visit?
By developed-world city standards, no — and 2026 is the cheapest it's been for dollar and euro holders in decades. A comfortable mid-range day runs ¥20,000–37,500 ($127–238) with hotel; the same comfort in Tokyo costs ¥5,000–10,000 more, mostly in the room rate.
How much is a trip to Osaka for a week?
Per person sharing, hotels included: budget ~¥44,000–74,000 ($280–470), mid-range ~¥140,000–262,000 ($890–1,660), plus flights, the ¥3,000 departure tax and any USJ day (¥8,400–11,900 ticket). A couple's mid-range week lands around $2,000–3,300 on the ground all-in.
Is Osaka cheaper than Tokyo?
Yes, structurally: rooms run ¥2,000–3,000/night less at every tier, and food value is Osaka's signature — 59 Michelin Bib Gourmands (more than Kyoto) mean serious dinners under ¥5,000. Transit and attractions price about the same; the hotel line is where the trip gets cheaper.
How much cash should I bring to Osaka?
¥10,000–15,000 per person for a city-only week covers the cash-only holdouts — market stalls, shrines, some izakaya and lockers. Japan still transacts ~50% in cash, but cards and tap cover hotels, trains and most restaurants. ATM strategy and the full cash story: /osaka-practical/.
How much is the USJ day on top?
Realistically ¥12,000–30,000 ($76–190) per adult: the ¥8,400–11,900 Studio Pass (dynamic daily pricing from 1 Sept 2026), food and lockers inside, and — if Super Nintendo World is the reason you're going — an Express Pass tier from ¥9,800. The honest tier-by-tier math: /usj-express-pass/.
Do prices go up in cherry blossom season?
Rooms do, hard: +30–40% for late March–early April, Golden Week and the November foliage weeks, and the cheap inventory sells first. Food, transit and attractions barely move. Book 3–4 months out for those windows or shift a week either side — /best-time-to-visit/ maps the whole year.
