DEPENDS 5/5 for theme-park people and kids. Skip it on a 7-day first Japan trip.

USJ is the best Universal park outside the US and the only place on earth where Super Nintendo World and Donkey Kong Country opened first — and it still doesn't belong on every Osaka itinerary. If you love theme parks or travel with kids, it justifies a full day and this cluster will save you real money and real queue-hours. If you're on a first 7-day Japan trip, the honest advice — and the Reddit consensus — is to skip it: it eats a full day and ¥8,400–11,900 ($53–75) per adult before food, and Japan is outside the gates. Either way, know the system: ticket booths closed permanently on 6 May 2025, everything is bought online, and from 1 September 2026 prices re-adjust daily with demand.

Three changes that outdate every old guide

The 2026 situation

USJ in 2026 is not the park your 2023 blog post describes. Three structural changes decide how you should book.

First: there is no gate. USJ closed its ticket booths permanently on 6 May 2025 — there is no walk-up option, every ticket must be bought online before you arrive. From 1 September 2026 prices also re-adjust daily with demand, so the price you see today is a snapshot: book as early as your dates are fixed. Every USJ visit now starts on your phone, days or weeks before the train — which is why every page in this cluster tells you when to book, not just what things cost.

Second: the park got bigger where it matters. Donkey Kong Country opened 11 December 2024 — the world's first — expanding the Nintendo footprint by roughly 1.7× the original Super Mario area. It shares Super Nintendo World's timed-entry system, which means the morning entry scramble now decides two lands, not one. How the timed-entry lottery actually works →

Third: every published price is a snapshot. From 1 September 2026 USJ re-adjusts prices daily with demand, even after tickets are on sale. The price at purchase is final — which converts 'book early' from advice into arithmetic. All prices on these pages are ranges, verified August 2026, at ¥157.7 = $1.

USJ questions people actually search

FAQPage schema paired
Can you buy tickets at the Universal Studios Japan gate?

No. The ticket booths closed permanently on 6 May 2025 — there is no walk-up window at all. Buy online before you travel; tickets go on sale 2 months ahead and peak dates sell out.

How much are USJ tickets in 2026?

1-Day Studio Pass ¥8,400–11,900 adult ($53–75) and ¥5,500–7,400 child, by date. Twilight (from 15:00) ¥5,900–8,300, 1.5-Day ¥13,600–18,200, 2-Day ¥16,000–21,400. From 1 September 2026 prices re-adjust daily with demand, so treat every figure as a snapshot.

How do I get to USJ from Osaka Station?

JR Loop Line to Nishikujō (4 min), cross the platform to the JR Yumesaki Line to Universal City (4 min) — about 12 minutes and ¥190 door to door, then a 5-minute walk through Universal CityWalk. From Namba allow ~25 minutes; a taxi from central Osaka runs ¥3,500–5,000.

Is USJ worth it if you're not a theme-park person?

Honestly, no — on a first 7-day Japan trip it eats a full day and ¥8,400–11,900 per adult that Kyoto (28 minutes away) beats. The compromise is the Twilight Pass from 15:00 at ¥5,900–8,300 for the neon, the Potter castle at night and two or three rides.

How many days do you need at Universal Studios Japan?

One full day covers the majors if you arrive 60–90 minutes before opening and follow a plan; two days does Nintendo and Potter properly at a human pace. The 1.5-Day pass (¥13,600–18,200) — afternoon one, full day two — is the underrated middle option.

Do you need an Express Pass at USJ?

Not for the rides — Single Rider and a quiet date handle those. What Express actually sells in 2026 is guaranteed entry into Super Nintendo World, because free timed-entry slots vanish in 15–20 seconds at opening. Pay from ¥16,800 for that certainty on busy dates, or skip it on quiet weekdays.
